Cessna C525 Citation instructor

From the Part-FCL licensing point of view, Cessna C525 Citation is considered a high performance complex aircraft, and the type rating instructor endorsement is therefore required to in order be able to deliver any kind of training for Cessna C525 Citation.

In the past, during the JAR-FCL1 times, Cessna C525 Citation instructor endorsement was considered a class rating instructor - CRI(A). The idea behind that comes from the early JAR-FCL1 times. The idea was that all single-pilot high performance aircrafts (ie light business jets such C525, RA390, etc) will considered one class of the aircraft. This did not happen and specific license endorsement was required for every single turbojet type.

When transition from JAR-FCL1 to Part-FCL happened back in 2013, the CRI(A) to TRI(A) for the single-pilot high performance complex aircraft - SP HPCA was one of the major changes within the licensing process.

Different countries adopted the transfer differently. One of the main changes was the multi-pilot operation training. During the JAR-FCL1 times, no endorsement was required to provide multi-pilot trainings. So even an instructor, a holder of the CRI(A) without any additional qualification, was eligible to instruct the candidates for Cessna C525 Citation multi-pilot environment, as it was required by EU-OPS. Dealing with the multi-pilot training requirements was usually left to operators and their Operations Manual, Part-D.

How does it work now?

In order do be allowed to provide any kind of training - i.e. type rating or renewal courses on Cessna C525 Citation, the pilot for instructor certificate must hold the type rating instructor certificate for type Cessna C525 Citation.

The general requirements to become Cessna C525 Citation type rating instructor are defined by the FCL.915.TRI(c):

Candidate for the TRI(SPA) shall:

  • have completed, within the 12 months preceding the date of application, 30 route sectors, including take-offs and landings, as PIC on the applicable aeroplane type, of which 15 sectors may be completed in an FFS representing that type; and
  • have competed at least 500 hours flight time as pilot on aeroplanes, including 30 hours as PIC on the applicable type of aeroplane; or hold or have held an FI certificate for multi-engine aeroplanes with IR(A) privileges;

Flight crew license endorsement for the differs from country to country. Usually, the endorsement in the license may be either:

  • TRI(A)
  • TRI(SPA)
  • TRI(A) C525 SP

In order to extend the privileges for the Cessna C525 Citation multi-pilot trainings, over the top, the holder of the TRI(A) instructor certificate must obtain a so-called multi-crew cooperation instructor - MCCI(A) certificate.

Candidate for the MCCI(A) must meet the requirements of the FCL.915.MCCI:

  • hold or have held a CPL, MPL or ATPL in the appropriate aircraft category;
  • have at least 1500 hours of flying experience as a pilot on multi- pilot operations;

Without the MCCI(A) the privileges of TRI(A) are restricted only to the Cessna C525 Citation trainings. Thus the TRI(A) is not allowed to provide the trainings for the candidate who will be involved in the commercial environment (AOC holder).

Specific and different endorsement procedures may be applied to the holders who transferred their instructor certificates from JAR-FCL1 times to their Part-FCL license - ie from CRI(A) to TRI(A).

In that case, some countries do not require the MCCI(A) certificate, because the instructors were providing the instruction also within the commercial (multi-crew) environment before the change of the legislation.
